This post will discuss tips for breastfeeding at night to help you feel more comfortable.
1. Prepare a Feeding Station
Being comfortable is important for a good feed. Choose a comfortable chair that will help keep you upright and allow you to get a great feeding position.
Have pillows and a step stool ready to help you with your feeding positions. I like to use the u-shaped pillow that I used during pregnancy. This ensures that you look after your back. We do not need any more discomfort in our lives, look after yourself as best as you can.
Set up a little station for yourself, and keep a glass or bottle of water and some healthy snacks nearby.
I don’t know about you but breastfeeding makes me super dehydrated. Yes, this will create a vicious cycle that will have you running back and forth to the toilet.
2. The Importance of Lighting
A dim light can be helpful to help you see if your baby is latching on properly. Putting on a bright light can and will most likely disturb the baby’s and your sleep.
It is important to also consider your phone. Using your phone or a tablet can be useful to help you stay awake during the feed. Remember to put the night light on your phone to help you sleep better.
3. Comfortable Clothing
Consider wearing breastfeeding-friendly clothing or simply buy button-up pajamas which will allow you to have easy access to your boobs. Buying a nursing bra that is more comfortable for the night will help with your feeds.
4. Prepare for Safe Co-Sleeping
There are pros and cons of co-sleeping. It can be a good and convenient way to breastfeed at night. However, it is important that you practice it safely. Make sure that you check out the best practice guidelines for your country. For example, the lullaby trust can provide you with safe co-sleeping tips and guidelines.
5. The Importance of Relaxation
It is important that you stay calm and relaxed. It is easy to get stressed out before feeding, especially at night. For me, it was super difficult to stay calm as I wanted to ensure that I fed as fast as I could to ensure that my baby’s cry did not disturb everyone in the house.
From experience, I know that taking the time to relax, take a few deep breaths, focus on your baby, and be in the moment with your baby will help you enjoy the feeding a bit more. The more I stressed, the more my baby cried and the longer it took to latch her on. Relaxing into it will help you be more comfortable when feeding.
6. Ask for Help
Do not hesitate to ask for help from your partner or a lactation specialist if you need help. They can offer valuable advice, support, and encouragement that can help your breastfeeding journey at night.
From experience, I know that asking for help is the hardest thing for me. I feel inadequate sometimes, however, there is no shame in asking for help and it may actually end up being good for you.

7. Get Enough Sleep
Okay, so this one is obvious and I know it is easier said than done! But, you need your sleep to help you through the rest of the day. Try to get a nap in whenever you can. It is so tempting to do all of your housework or laundry or even cook when the baby is sleeping and then try to schedule a nap after all of this is done.
Guess what? Babies are unpredictable, the nap you scheduled for 5 pm may not happen. Prioritise yourself and take that nap! You need to have your energy up for the night ahead. Running on no sleep and exhausting yourself even further during the day will lead to burnout!
